I have a small backyard with not that much sunshine. I want to start a garden, what kind of vegetables can I grow?
You can grow some vegetables in the shade, but the most common plants – tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, need 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight a day.
Leafy vegetable plants, like lettuce, Swiss chard, turnip greens, spinach, are the most tolerant to shade and will do well with just 4 hours of direct sunshine a day. Root vegetables, like carrots, beets, radishes and onions, like full sun but you can also
grow them in areas with just 4-6 hours of sun.
If your entire yard is in the shade, maybe you can try container gardening, that way you can move the containers to where the most full sunlight is.
