To fix a squeaky hardwood floor, you can try the following DIY steps:
1. Locate the squeaky spot
Walk across the floor and listen for the squeak. Mark the spot with a piece of masking tape.
2. Lift the floorboard
Using a pry bar, carefully lift the floorboard next to the squeaky spot.
3. Lubricate the subfloor
Apply a generous amount of powdered graphite, powdered graphite or silicone spray to the subfloor beneath the squeaky spot.
To apply talcum powder, sprinkle it onto the floor between the squeaking boards and sweep it into the cracks using a small brush or broom. For powdered graphite, tap the container to release a small amount of powder onto the floor and sweep it into the cracks. Silicone spray can be sprayed directly onto the subfloor, but it’s important to use a small amount to avoid making the floor too slippery.
Whichever lubricant you choose make sure that it reaches the affected areas by applying it between the boards or into the cracks
4. Secure the floorboard
Lower the floorboard back into place and secure it with screws.
