Winter’s over, now it’s time to go outside and survey your home for any potential damage. Get ready for Spring and get your home looking like new again!
Check and clean all your gutters.
Prevent water from backing up into your home from clogged gutters. Remove all leaves and other debris, and don’t forget to clean the downspouts. After removing the larger debris, use a garden hose to clean any roof shingle granules and other dirty build-up. Also, make sure all your downs pouts are properly positioned facing away from your home and into splash blocks.
While you’re up there, check the roof
Check your roofing shingles for damage and replace any loose or cracked roofing shingles, or shingles with missing granules. Also, inspect areas of roof flashing against walls, chimneys, skylights and vent pipes.
Check all exterior window and door seals
Cold winter weather can harden and crack your window and door sealant. Check all of those areas and repair or replace as needed to keep your home sealed, and help keep your home energy costs under control by keeping the weather outside.
It’s also a good idea to check wood trim around doors, windows, decks and railings. Use a screwdriver to lightly probe the wood trim to for damage. Make any repairs before the spring rains do more damage.
Check door and window screens
Before setting up your screens for the coming warm weather, carefully check each window and door screen and repair all holes and tears. Most home-improvement and hardware stores sell easy to use screen repair kits.
Inspect Concrete Slabs
If you have them, inspect concrete driveways, patios and sidewalk slabs for cracked concrete or loose parts. Fill any cracks with a concrete crack filler or silicone caulk. If needed, pressure wash and seal the concrete.
Check Exterior Water Faucets
Check your outside hose faucets for damage from the winter freezing. If left outside also check your garden hoses for leaks.
To check your outside faucet, cover the faucet opening with your thumb and turn on the water. The water pressure should not allow you to stop the water, If you can stop the water flow, your inside pipe is damaged and would need to be replaced.
Service your home cooling system
Don’t wait until its 100 degrees outside to service your air conditioner, have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service your air conditioner about a month before regular use. Also change your interior filters on a regular basis.
After you’ve checked everything outside your home, go back inside and check all of your smoke detector batteries. Any time is a good time to check all of your home’s smoke alarms. Check and replace batteries where needed to keep your home safe year round.
